Wearing modern robes during commencement ceremonies started out because of a tradition that comes from the early centers of learning and scientific research. Some also rooted from religious monasteries around the globe.
Graduation day is a very solemn and peaceful after long years of striving and hardships. Clergy dresses were adopted by early colleges and academies. At that time, there are only simple black robes as the main standard of the graduation gown, and it symbolizes the essentially of the event.
Nowadays, different universities require every student and faculty to wear informed graduation gown and other accessory according to their set rules and guidelines. This may vary according to the institution where they take their degree. Some doctorate costumes have different styles like bell shaped sleeves and long open sleeves. Doctorates and Bachelors have more symbols around their graduation gowns, and it greatly symbolizes their field of study and their specific academic rankings. This is incomparable in comparison to the Undergraduates graduation gown and accessories.
For men the most common styles are wearing dark colors that will match their graduation gown, and they also wear neck ties for formality. For male a pair of black shirt and pants will work especially if the graduation gown and other accessories are darker in the shade.
